WP 4: Capacity building (Month 1 – Month 12)

RBINS (Leader) (2 PM) (in-kind 2 PM), RMCA (2.5 PM) (in-kind 3.5 PM), CETAF (in-kind 0.7 PM), Meise BG (in-kind 3 PM), Belgian Biodiversity Platform (in-kind 0 PM), ULiège (in-kind 0.4 PM), UMons (in-kind 0.4 PM)

The aim of this WP is to establish a framework for strengthening a partnership and collaboration between the Belgian DiSSCo partners for the description of the collections and the standardization of the multimedia datasets.

T.4.1.

Data and metadata collect of natural history collections (Month 1 – Month 12)

RBINS (leader) (0.5M) (in-kind 0.5 PM), RMCA (Leader) (0.5 PM) (in-kind 0.5 PM), CETAF (in-kind 0.5 PM), Meise BG (in-kind 0.5 PM), Belgian Biodiversity Platform (in-kind 0 PM), ULiège (in-kind 0.1 PM), UMons (in-kind 0.1 PM)

This task will organize documentation and capacity building related to standardization of the data and metadata of the natural history collections description using the Latimer Core.

D.4.1.1

Dataset (Month 12)

T.4.2.

High Resolution Digitization of natural history specimens (Month 1 – Month 12)

RBINS (0.5 PM) (in-kind 0.5 PM), RMCA (Leader) (1 PM) (in-kind 0.5 PM), CETAF (in-kind 0.1 PM), Meise BG (in-kind 0 PM), Belgian Biodiversity Platform (in-kind 0 PM), ULiège (in-kind 0.1 PM), UMons (in-kind 0.1 PM),

This task aims to produce updated the best practices and several training courses related to the High-Resolution Digitization tools allowing scientists to digitize natural history specimens and to compare/export their data with/to the DiSSCo ecosystem.

T.4.4

Citizen Sciences Contributing to the digitization workflows (Month 1 – Month 12)

RBINS (0.5 PM) (in-kind 0.5 PM), RMCA (Leader) (0.5 PM) (in-kind 2 PM), CETAF (in-kind 0 PM), Meise BG (in-kind 2 PM), Belgian Biodiversity Platform (in-kind 0 PM), ULiège (in-kind 0.1 PM), UMons (in-kind 0.1 PM),

As part of the digitization program of Meise Botanic Garden (DOE! Projects), a platform for crowdsourcing was developed to allow citizens to contribute to the digitization of natural and cultural history specimens (www.doedat.be). Within DiSSCo Flanders, the platform is further developed as a service that can be used by the DiSSCo partners. This involves active modification of the current ways of data entry, but also an investment in communication with all different stakeholders and the community of (potential) volunteers. Some case studies will be developed in collaboration with the CANAHIST project using the Central Africa collections which are represented in the Belgian DiSSCo partners. Moreover, many citizens have private collections related to this area due to past Belgian colonial history.

D.4.4.1

Identification of the Central Africa collections among the Belgian DiSSCo partners and in private citizen collections using a specific survey. (Months 6)

D.4.4.2

Case studies project on the citizen science digitization of the Central Africa collections (Months 12)
